1. Overview
Commonshelf Pty Ltd (“we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the ReShelvd mobile application. By using the App, you agree to the data practices described in this policy.
2. Data We Collect
We collect information to provide and improve our book-trading marketplace:
- Account Information: Name, email address, profile picture, address, city, bio, and preferred genres provided during registration or profile setup. You may also sign in via Apple or Google.
- Inventory Metadata: Titles, authors, and ISBNs extracted from book spines using our AI-powered image recognition technology.
- Geolocation Data: Your precise GPS coordinates (collected only while using the app) to facilitate local trading.
- Communications Data: Messages you send and receive within the App, including trade requests and their status.
- Notification Data: Device tokens used to deliver push notifications, and your notification preferences.
- Social Data: Users you follow, block, or report, and ratings you give or receive after trades.
3. How We Use Your Location
Location transparency is core to ReShelvd, but we prioritize your safety:
- Obfuscated Display: We collect your precise location, but we never show it to other users. All map pins are subject to a 100–200 meter offset.
- Purpose: Your location is used solely to show your library to nearby users and to help you discover books within a reasonable distance.
- Control: You can disable location permissions in your device settings at any time, though this will disable the map-based trading features of the App.
4. Camera and Image Data
When you use your camera to scan book spines:
- Processing: Images are sent to a third-party AI service (Google) for analysis to identify book titles, authors, and ISBNs. Images are processed in memory and are not stored on our servers or on Google’s servers beyond the time needed to process the request.
- Storage: We store the resulting text data (e.g., “The Great Gatsby”) in our database. We do not store the original photos on our servers. Images are never saved to your device library unless you choose to do so.
5. Data Storage and Security
- Provider: Your data is stored securely using secure cloud infrastructure with encrypted databases. Data may be stored on servers located in Australia and/or international data centers. All data is encrypted in transit using TLS and at rest.
- Retention: We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you request account deletion, your account enters a 30-day deactivation period during which you may cancel the request by signing back in. After 30 days, all associated data is permanently deleted from our systems.
6. Subscription & Payment Data
Payments for ReShelvd Unlimited are handled exclusively by the Apple App Store. Commonshelf Pty Ltd does not collect or store your credit card numbers or bank account details. We only receive transaction verification data (such as a transaction identifier) from Apple to validate and unlock your premium features.
7. Third-Party Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We only share information with third parties in the following cases:
- Service Providers: Cloud infrastructure providers (for hosting, database, and authentication services), Google (for AI-powered book recognition and book metadata lookup), Open Library (for public book catalog data), and Apple (for push notification delivery and subscription verification).
- Legal Requirements: If required by Australian law or valid legal process.
8. Your Rights (GDPR/APP/CCPA)
Regardless of your location, we provide the following rights to all users:
- Access & Portability: Request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Correction: Update inaccurate account information.
- Deletion: Delete your account and all associated data via the in-app “Delete Account” button.
- Opt-Out: Withdraw consent for location tracking or push notifications via your device settings or in-app preferences.
9. Communications Data
When you use the in-app messaging feature:
- Messages: Text messages and trade requests you send are stored on our servers and delivered to the intended recipient. Messages are only visible to the participants of a conversation.
- Local Cache: Recent conversations may be temporarily cached on your device for up to 24 hours to improve performance. This cache is automatically cleared.
- Trade Data: Details of trade requests (books offered and requested, trade status, and user ratings) are stored to facilitate and track exchanges between users.
10. Push Notifications
If you enable push notifications, we collect a device token provided by Apple’s Push Notification service (APNs) and store it securely on our servers. This token is used solely to deliver notifications about new messages, trade updates, and nearby book activity. You can manage your notification preferences within the App or disable push notifications entirely in your device settings. Your device token is deleted from our servers when you log out or delete your account.
11. Children’s Privacy
ReShelvd is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe that a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@commonshelf.io and we will take steps to delete such information promptly.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. If we make material changes, we will notify you by posting the updated policy within the App or by email. Your continued use of the App after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
